BEST DAY EVER by Kaira Rouda is a twisty, edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller which takes place over the course of one day, designed to be the “Best Day Ever” for a perfect couple.
When the story begins, advertising executive Paul Strom and his homemaker wife Mia are driving to their lake house for a romantic weekend getaway, leaving their two little boys behind at home with a babysitter. It’s been a long time since they’ve had a break from the kids, and today is supposed to be a special treat for them, everything absolutely perfect, their “Best Day Ever.”
But they got a late start due to a last-minute phone call Paul had to take, and now they’re unable to buy croissants at the bakery near the lake as planned. Mia is fuming but forces herself to smile, and Paul sloughs it off as a minor imperfection in what is still destined to be their Best Day Ever.
But nothing’s every perfect, and the missed croissants turn out to be just the first loose thread in a tapestry of lies, infidelity, and deceit that causes not just their Best Day Ever to unravel, but their lives as well…
Paul is the unreliable narrator of this tale, which makes for a highly entertaining experience since his perspective on himself and his relationships is so laughably cockeyed when compared with others’ viewpoints and unfolding reality.
Intriguing, believable characters. And a diabolically clever plot, with more twists and turns than you can shake a stick – or a wooden snake – at.
While the characters in this book clearly aren’t having their Best Day Ever, you just might if you give this scintillating thriller a read.
